The Network Theatre in Waterloo is finally re-opening it’s doors since the COVID-19 shutdown of March 2020. As with all theatres, The Network had to close its doors and has struggled through the pandemic with a mix of generous donors, funding and cutting costs wherever it can.
Up until the March 2020 shutdown, the theatre had been running continuously since (and during!) World War 2. In November 2020 it had tried to put on the production of “Back With Love”, a night of monologues and duologues, but due to the tenuous restrictions situation, has had to postpone twice. “Looking back we couldn’t imagine how long it would be before we opened our doors again to live theatre and a live audience.” says Theatre Chair Sue Small, “So it is with huge excitement and a little apprehension that we fling
open our doors again and welcome an audience to the Arches underneath Waterloo!”
With the arrival of Spada Productions – putting on their first show since 2018 – The Network Theatre are now starting their Autumn season with a piece of new writing: ‘The Madhouse, Fancy Dress & Party Shop’. This one woman show, written during the socially-distanced restrictions, is a thriller that explores how solitude and running away from our issues, rather than dealing with them, can inevitably lead us to blow up dramatically and affect those around us.
“It’s fantastic to finally help open culture and arts in London again after a year and a half of struggling through a pandemic,” says Producer Christopher G. Jones. “The thriving Arts scene in London is part of what makes this city so fantastic, and everyone needs an excuse to escape, enjoy themselves and be entertained after a difficult period. It’s also a pleasure to have Eliza McClelland joining us as Gloria!”

Gloria, a retired actress, runs away from her husband to start up a fancy dress shop. Shortly after, her husband goes missing. Gloria’s son is concerned, but Gloria has more important things to deal with: flies, rats and a clown costume that just won’t come clean.
Isolated inside her own shop, an old-fashioned telephone is Gloria’s only link to the outside world. But as much as she tries to keep reality out, and live in denial, the damp smell from the large cellar beneath the building, is a constant reminder of her past and why she ran away.
‘The Madhouse, Fancy Dress and Party Shop’ is a fun-house ride into the mind of a woman with dark secrets hidden inside a clothes trunk.
