icddr,b: Delta variant detected in over half of Dhaka’s Covid patients

Over 60% of Dhaka’s Covid patients have been infected with the deadly Delta variant, also known as the Indian variant, according to a recent study by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b).

The study, conducted from the last week of May till the first week of June, analyzed the genomic sequence of 60 samples from Covid-19 patients in the capital and found that 68% matched the Delta variant of Covid-19, AKM Tariful Islam Khan,  icddr,b Senior Manager (communications), told Dhaka Tribune.

According to the icddr,b findings, some 22% of the other samples tested were of the South Africa variant, a couple of the Nigerian variant while the rest of the samples matched with the Wuhan variant.

Findings from various research and genome sequencing conducted recently indicate that the recent spike in Covid cases and deaths in the country’s border districts were triggered by the Delta variant.

However, it is the South African variant that is responsible for the coronavirus upsurge in Chittagong, as shown in the findings.
