Aziz Ullah, Chottogram::Another dead whale has washed ashore on Himchhari beach in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday morning.

Locals spotted the smaller whale about 500 meters south, where the first dead giant whale was spotted on Friday.

Supposedly the 25-30 feet dead whale washed ashore with the tidal water and got stuck in the sand.

Sameer Kumar Saha, Sadar range officer of Cox’s Bazar Forest Department (South) confirmed the matter saying, “The dead whale, found earlier on Friday, was buried at around 1 am with the help of excavator machines.”

He noted that the body of the smaller whale found Saturday will also be buried soon.

Mohammad Ashraful Haque, a senior scientific officer and PhD fellow at the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, said the dead animal that came ashore on Friday was an adult Bryde’s whale.

Bryde’s whale is a species of the blue whale that inhabits the Bay of Bengal.

“Whales usually move in groups. Whales often die if they leave their pack for any reason. The same thing could have happened to the two whales found on Friday and today, and these whales are thought to have died at least 10/12 days ago,” he said.

However, Mohammad Ashraful could not pinpoint the exact cause of their death.
